If you're in the Phoenix area, I highly recommend taking a trip to ASU's Tempe campus and viewing Elise Derringer's MFA thesis exhibition, Perception & Passage. I have a few photographs to give you an example of her work, but I'll warn you - as great as the pieces look in the photos, they are even better in real life!

| Keeping What's Important, fiber-reactive dye on silk, salt, sand, spices. |
Elise worked mainly with silk, dyed in different ways and sculpturally combined with sand, concrete, and other materials. In her artist's statement, she describes her work as "... a record of a few small steps on a long path, and left open for understanding." Each piece shows this record in a different way - some, such as Here and No Further: High Water Mark, show the leftover effects of time, others a quick snapshot of a moment gone. With Inaccessible Pockets, one of my favorites, stones are sewn into pieces of silk that have been dyed and printed. On each frame is a sentence describing a piece of time in the past. Unfortunately, I did not get good photos of either.

The exhibit runs through Friday, September 16th in the Harry Wood Gallery located in the Art Building (map here). The gallery hours are Monday - Thursday 9am - 5pm and Friday 9am - 3pm.
