Wednesday Sewing - Halloween Bag

I won't be able to spend Halloween with little c, so I decided to make her a Halloween bag with felt trick or treats.  The bag is really easy and can be made in any color with different Halloween designs.

Important!  If you are making any toys for a child under three years of age, take these precautions:
1.  Make sure all pieces that are swallowable (able to fit through a toilet paper tube) are securely sewn on.  I double sew each piece on and then knot it several times in several different spots.  To do this, when you are finished double sewing the piece on, make a knot in the thread and push the needle through to another spot.  Repeat several times.
2.  I use crinkly packaging to make "crinkle" toys.  If you do this, make sure none of the plastic is showing on the outside of the seam.
3.  If you decide to use a jingle or other noise making addition, make sure it is securely in the center of the stuffing and that all seams are sewn twice.

Bag:
1.  Cut two 7 1/2 by 9 inch pieces of felt.  Use pinking shears to make a zigzag top.

2.  Attach any features to one side of the bag by machine sewing around each edge.

3.  Pin together with right sides together.  Sew along both sides and the bottom, about 1/4 inch from edge.

4.  To make a bottom that allows the bag to stand up, measure a 2 inch line across each corner as shown below.

5.  Sew along line and trim.

6.  For handle, cut two pieces of felt 2 by 14 inches.  Sew along all edges and down the center.

7.  Attach to both sides of bag with extra stitching as shown below.

Crinkle Candy Corn
1.  Cut strips of orange, yellow, and white felt.  Pin together with yellow overlapping orange and white overlapping white.

2.  Sew along edges of felt.

3.  Cut out two candy corn shapes using this pattern or your own.

4.  Cut out a candy corn shape from crinkly plastic and trim abut 1/4 inch off of edge.  Diaper wipe packaging, thicker crinkly shopping bags, and disposable razor packages are some good crinklers I've found.

5.  Layer plastic between candy corn shapes and sew around the outside.

I also made a pumpkin and an apple with jingles inside.  The instructions can be found here on the Nuno Life blog and the pattern here.  I made the apple by adding a leaf and not pulling the sides in as instructed for the pumpkin.

Happy Creating!  Deborah
